N-Layer Dip

What you need

Any combination of the following:

  • Refried beans (1 can for ~4 people)

  • Ground meat

  • Sour cream

  • Salsa

  • Mexican-style shredded cheese

  • Lettuce

  • Diced onion

  • Fresh diced tomatoes

  • Chopped green onions

  • Jalapeños, fresh or pickled

  • Sliced black olives

  • Cilantro

  • Seasonings: taco seasoning, roasted ground cumin, Aleppo pepper, garlic powder, oregano

What to do

  1. Depending on which layers you choose, only a few of them require some preparation.

    Refried Beans

Heat some olive oil in a skillet. Sauté diced onions on medium heat until slightly brown. Add in canned refried beans, along with 1/2 tsp roasted cumin powder, 1/2 tsp oregano, 1/4 tsp Aleppo pepper, and 1/2 tsp garlic powder. For an extra smooth mix, sprinkle in 1/4 cup of shredded cheese. Add 1/4 cup of warm water and mix well. Simmer on low for 5 minutes.

    Ground meat

Sauté ground meat in olive oil. Add 1 to 2 tbsp of taco seasoning, and cook on medium-high heat until brown.

    Sour cream

My newest flavor boost has been mixing taco seasoning into the sour cream, a pro tip I learned from my cousin last year. I whip the sour cream and about 3 to 4 tbsp of taco seasoning together before layering.

  2. Layer ingredients in a glass container. This is the order I usually go in; just skip the layers that you’re opting out for. From the bottom up:

    • Refried beans

    • Sour cream

    • Ground meat

    • Salsa

    • Shredded cheese

    • Lettuce

    • Green onions

    • Diced tomatoes

    • Sliced jalapeños

    • Black olives

    • Cilantro

  3. Serve with tortilla chips and enjoy!
